Programme Overview

The programmes offer a study related to the principles of Usuluddin in multidisciplinary areas including Aqidah and Islamic Thought, al-Quran and al-Hadith, Dakwah and Human Development, History and Islamic Civilization. The programmes uniquely represent an integration between Islamic and contemporary knowledge. Students may also choose to undertake research in the one of the following areas of specialization:


• Al-Quran and Al-Hadith

• Aqidah and Islamic Thought

• Da’wah and Human Development

• Islamic History and Civilization


The dynamic and fast paced developing world calls for the need of more and more Islamic scholars. Needless to say, this programme is UM’s in response to that particular need. Allencompassing and in-depth, the programme offers a detailed look on the Islamic principles and thinking in order to produce analytical graduates who will undoubtedly heed the call for their religion and their nation. The objectives of this programme are; to produce scholars in Quran and Hadith who have outstanding credibility and expertise in these disciplines, to raise intellectuals who hold fast to the Quranic teachings and Prophetic traditions and set free from blind imitation of dogmatic practices that have invalid evidence, to contribute quality publications and research works that can give benefits to the Muslim ummah and nation at large, to produce graduates who embrace Islamic aqidah and possess integrated knowledge in order to meet the needs of contemporary society, to produce high quality researches and publications on aqidah and Islamic thought as contributions at national and international levels, to promote intellectual networking and to provide consultation and to produce student who possess da’wah and human development knowledge in meeting the needs of today's society, to bring forth students who have knowledge and skills in developing da’wah programmes, to support students with the ability in providing appropriate services through various da’wah activities, to develop students’ character, behavior, self-esteem, ethics, moral and spiritual values so that they can be accountable for their work and knowledge, to produce graduates who are competent in knowledge and sources of Islamic History and Civilization as well as able to analyze an relate it to contemporary issues, to produce excellent graduate who are equipped with skill of leadership integration efficient in their career and socialiazible within community and to produce graduate who are able to apply long life learning through conducting researches especially in field of Islamic History and Civilization.


Full-Time Duration: 4 Semesters (Research)

  2. IMB7002  - Dissertation (Must be registered every semester until thesis is submitted)
  3. Additional Courses (If only stated in the offer letter)
  4. TXGZ6102 - Basic of Malaysia Language** (For international candidates only)
  5. IELTS/TOEFL**(For international candidates who are writing their thesis in Arabic/Malay language only)

  • For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
    • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or
  • For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following): 
    • Graduate from Universiti Malaya; or
    • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
    • Produce publications in related field; or
    • Receive a scholarship; or
    • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
    • Pass an interview conducted by the Faculty; or
    • Pass a special evaluation by the Faculty
