Programme Overview

The word ‘surgery’ is derived from the Greek Churriguera meaning ‘hand work’. The exact art and the subtle science that is demanded from experts in this field is clearly illustrated in the Master of Surgery programmer offered by UM. The programmer is committed to increasing future experts in the field of surgery. Students are exposed to the finer points of surgery, as well as equipped with comprehensive preparation in the fundamentals. Students will be able to improve the care of surgical patients, and effectively addresses the demands of practicing surgeons, surgery residents, medical students, surgical patients, and the public.


Full-Time Duration: 8 Semesters, (Clinical)

Stage 1 :
General Surgery Posting:
  1. Six (6) Months:
    • Courses in Applied Basic Sciences
    • Principles of Surgery
  2. Additional Posting Options (6 Months):
    • Further General Surgery OR
  3. Two Postings of Three Months Each in:
    • Accident and Emergency
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Intensive Care
    • Anesthesiology
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Radiology
    • Any Other Surgical Specialty (Subject to Approval)
    • Initiation of Research Project

Stage 2 :
Surgical Specialties Rotation:
  1. Twelve (12) Months :
  2. Four Postings of Three Months Each:
  3. Two Compulsory Postings:
    • Urology
    • Neurosurgery
  4. Two Additional Postings in:
    • Cardiothoracic Surgery
    • Critical Care Medicine
    • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Continuation of Research Project

Stage 3 :
General Surgery:
  1. Twenty-Four (24) Months :
  2. Rotations Through General Surgical Sub-Specialties:
    • Colorectal
    • Upper Gastrointestinal
    • Hepatobiliary
    • Breast
    • Endocrine
    • Vascular
    • Trauma Surgery
    • Submission of Research Report
  3. Training Portfolio: Requirements:
    • Document Procedures, Duties, and Clinical Skills Training
    • Continuous Work-Place Assessment

Entry Requirement

General Entry Requirements

For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or

For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following):
  • Graduate from University Malaya; or
  • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
  • Produce publications in related field; or
  • Receive a scholarship; or
  • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
  • Pass an interview conducted by Faculty; or
  • Pass a Special evaluation by Faculty.

Specific Entry Requirements

  2. Bachelor's Degree Qualification: Possessed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate.
  3. Equivalent Qualification: N/A
  4. Related Fields: N/A.
  5. Special Requirements:
    • For Malaysian Citizen  Applicants: At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate


       OR 


    • For non-Malaysian citizen Applicants : Candidates who are Non-Citizen will be required to undertake and satisfactorily complete a three (3) months period of clinical attachment in the Department of Surgery prior to acceptance into the programme. A satisfactory attachment performance evaluation is a pre-requisite for entry into the programme.
    • Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
    • Pass the prescribed entrance assessment and interview.


    AND


    • The non-Malaysian citizen applicant who obtains a degree from a university or institution of higher learning that did not use English as the medium of instruction for the degree, shall be required to meet the specified requirements.
