MASTER OF SHARIAH (CONTEMPORARY STUDIES)



Programme Overview

To introduce the main themes and topics in the study of Shariah from a bird's eye view, making use of both traditional and modern perspectives while including western scholarship. Important topics covered and offered in this program include history and origins, sources and literature, methodologies and scope, institutions and popular movements, impact of society and politics, as well as modern development. At the end of the course, students are expected to explain and apply the knowledge and skills acquired in studies of the Shariah at the advanced stage. Students may also choose to undertake research in the one of the following areas of specialization:


• Fiqh and Usul Fiqh

• Shariah Law and Comparative Law

• Islamic Economy and Comparative Economy

• Siasah Syar’iyyah and Islamic Governance


Full-Time Duration: 3 Semesters (Mixed-Mode)

General Entry Requirements
  • For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
    • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or
  • For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following): 
    • Graduate from Universiti Malaya; or
    • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
    • Produce publications in related field; or
    • Receive a scholarship; or
    • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
    • Pass an interview conducted by the Faculty; or
    • Pass a special evaluation by the Faculty
