Programme Overview

This programme will produce counselling professionals who are able to apply their practical and theoretical knowledge in any institution in the community that needs counselling services.

Entry Requirement

General Entry Requirements

For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or

For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following):
  • Graduate from University Malaya; or
  • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
  • Produce publications in related field; or
  • Receive a scholarship; or
  • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
  • Pass an interview conducted by Faculty; or
  • Pass a Special evaluation by Faculty.

Specific Entry Requirements
  • General University Requirements: Fulfill the General University Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Qualification: Possessed a Bachelor's Degree of Counselling
  • Equivalent Qualification: N/A
  • Related Fields: A Bachelor's Degree in the discipline of Social Sciences.
  • Special Requirements:


    Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences with CGPA ≥ 3.00

    • Must fulfil at least ONE of the following criteria:
    • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in the helping profession; OR
    • Hold a Professional Qualification in the helping profession from a recognized professional body; OR
    • Hold other qualifications approved by the Senate from time to time

Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree in Counseling

  1. Possess a CGPA of 2.70 - 2.99:
    • Must fulfil BOTH of the following criteria:
      • Accumulate at least two (2) years of work experience in the helping profession; AND
    • Fulfil at least ONE of the following criteria:
      • Graduate from Universiti Malaya (UM); OR
      • Hold a professional qualification in the helping profession from a recognized professional body; OR
      • Receive a scholarship award; OR
      • Serve in a government agency.
  2. Possess a CGPA of 2.50 - 2.69
    • Must fulfil BOTH of the following criteria:
      • Accumulate at least three (3) years of work experience in the helping profession; AND
    • Fulfil at least ONE of the following criteria:
      • Graduate from Universiti Malaya (UM); OR
      • Hold a professional qualification in the helping profession from a recognized professional body; OR
      • Receive a scholarship award; OR
      • Serve in a government agency.
      • AND

      • Pass the Special assessment/interview by the faculty/Department (PTj)
