MASTER OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY (CLINICAL)


Programme Overview

Paediatric surgeons in Malaysia manage neonatal and paediatric surgical conditions from the newborn period to the age of twelve years. For some clinical conditions, management continues until adolescence. The scope of practice encompasses disorders involving the gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, thoracic, urological, vascular, and endocrine systems, and the oncological conditions related to these systems. Burns, polytrauma and transplant surgery may also require the expertise of paediatric surgeons. The ultimate objective of the Paediatric Surgeon is to facilitate a full and healthy life for their patients.


The Master of Paediatric Surgery programme is available to prospective trainees after a minimum of two years in clinical practice following their basic medical degree. The programme duration is a minimum of four years and additionally provides the basis for further sub-specialisation in areas such as urology, complex minimally invasive surgery, oncology, trauma surgery and organ transplantation surgery.

Stage 1 (Basic Clinical Training) - Year 1:
  • Development of Competencies in Applied Basic Sciences
  • General Principles of Paediatric Surgery

Part I Examination:
  • Required to Progress to Stage II


Stage II (Advanced Clinical Training and Research Project):
  • Advanced Clinical Training in Paediatric Surgery
  • Research Project

Completion Criteria:
  • Submission of Research Project Deemed Satisfactory by Evaluation Panel
  • Satisfactory Completion of Stage II
  • Passing the Part 2 Examination

Entry Requirement

General Entry Requirements
For applicants with a CGPA of not less that 3.00:
  • Possess a Bachelor's Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or
For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 - 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following):
  • Graduate from Universiti Malaya; or
  • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
  • Produce publications in related field; or
  • Receive a scholarship; or
  • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
  • Pass an interview conducted by faculty; or
  • Pass a special evaluation by faculty.

  • Bachelor’s Degree Qualification: Possessed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate.

    • For Malaysian Citizen Applicants:
      • Has at least two (2) years of relevant clinical experience following full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council at the time of entry:

        a. This experience may include working in surgical specialties or paediatric medical specialties. 

        b. A minimum of six (6) months prior experience in a general surgery. 

      • Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; 

      • Pass the entrance evaluation assessment recognized by the institutions.

      • Shows evidence of the ability to safely perform the required Entry Essential Learning Activities (ELA) in the Appendix 1 of the Malaysian Specialty Program Training document. 

      • A minimum of 6 months prior experience in a paediatric surgical unit is highly recommended.

    • OR
    • For Non-Malaysian Citizen Applicants:
      • i). Has at least two (2) years of relevant clinical experience following full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council at the time of entry:

        a. This experience may include working in surgical specialties or paediatric medical specialties. 

        b. A minimum of six (6) months prior experience in a general surgery. 

      • Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia.

      • Pass the entrance evaluation assessment recognized by the institutions.

      • Shows evidence of the ability to safely perform the required Entry Essential Learning Activities (ELA) in the Appendix 1 of the Malaysian Specialty Program Training document. 

      • A minimum of 6 months prior experience in a paediatric surgical unit is highly recommended.

      • Undertake and satisfactorily complete a six (6) months period of clinical attachment in one of the unit/department of the Paediatric Surgery in Malaysia prior to acceptance into the programme. 

    • AND
    • The non-Malaysian citizen applicant who obtains a degree from a university or institution of higher learning that did not use English as the medium of instruction for the degree, shall be required to meet the specified requirements.
