MASTER OF OPHTHALMOLOGY


Programme Overview

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the eye and vision. This important and dynamic specialty can be subdivided further into Glaucoma, Medical and Surgical Retina, Uveitis and Orbital Inflammatory Disease, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Cornea and Refractive Surgery, Neuro-ophthalmology, and Oculoplasty subspecialities. During the period of training, trainees are exposed to the theoretical and practical knowledge relevant to all the subspecialties. Additionally, they are required to undertake a research project in order to complete the Masters in Ophthalmology degree. The general aim of this Masters degree training is to produce competent Ophthalmologists who are able to practice safely and effectively.

Stage 2 (Second and Third Years):
  1. Clinical Ophthalmology Training

Preparation of Case Studies Report:
  1. Number of Cases as Determined by the Department

Stage 3 (Fourth year)
  1. Advanced Clinical Training in Ophthalmology
  2. Research Project

Entry Requirement

General Entry Requirements

For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or

For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following):
  • Graduate from University Malaya; or
  • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
  • Produce publications in related field; or
  • Receive a scholarship; or
  • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
  • Pass an interview by Faculty; or
  • Pass a Special evaluation by Faculty.

  2. Bachelor's Degree Qualification: Possessed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate.

  5. Special Requirements:


    1. At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
    2. Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
    3. Passed the entrance evaluation and successful interview.


    AND


    The non-Malaysian citizen applicant who obtains a degree from a university or institution of higher learning that did not use English as the medium of instruction for the degree, shall be required to meet the specified requirements.
