Programme Overview

This program is developed specifically to candidates without Islamic studies background. Areas of research under this program include the above and mainly on comparative basis of candidate area of knowledge through academic qualification or work experience. The programme aims to produce graduates who are fully equipped with skills of data analysis, ability to conduct research in laboratory, ability to develop professionalism of Muslim Scientist, contribute to society and perform lifelong learning process. Realizing the significance of education in Islam, the Academy of Islamic Studies has continuously aspired to produce graduates that are highly intelligent, equipping them with the knowledge to not only better themselves, but to further improve the Islamic society.


Full-Time Duration: 4 Semesters (Research)

  1. IMX7001 - Research Methodology**
  2. IMC7002  - Dissertation (Must be registered every semester until thesis is submitted)
  3. Additional Courses (If only stated in the offer letter)
  4. TXGZ6102 - Basic of Malaysia Language** (For international candidates only)
  5. IELTS/TOEFL**(For international candidates who are writing their thesis in Arabic/Malay language only)                     

Notes: **exemption for these courses can be applied to the faculty if the candidates already take/pass in the previous university (with proof)

Entry Requirement

General Entry Requirements
  • For applicants with a CGPA of not less than 3.00:
    • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or
  • For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following): 
    • Graduate from Universiti Malaya; or
    • Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
    • Produce publications in related field; or
    • Receive a scholarship; or
    • Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
    • Pass an interview conducted by the Faculty; or
    • Pass a special evaluation by the Faculty

  • Bachelor’s Degree Qualification: Possess an Honours Bachelor's Degree
  • Equivalent Qualification: N/A
  • Related fields: 
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Shariah, Usuluddin, or Islamic Studies.
    • Candidates without a specific degree in Shariah, Usuluddin, or Islamic Studies but interested in conducting interdisciplinary research with a specialization in Islamic Studies may also be considered, subject to faculty requirements or any other qualification approved by the University Senate.
  • Special Requirements: Candidates are required to attend and pass additional courses as specified by the Faculty.
