Internal Medicine Physician provides care across the vastly diverse and complex field of adult medicine, ranging from acute critically ill emergency to the long-term management of chronic medical conditions. This field requires a comprehensive knowledge of medicine, including its recognised subspecialties. Internal medicine is the largest medical speciality in Malaysia, with more than 2000 specialists and over 800 trainees.Internal Medicine deals with a myriad of diseases in adults from the simple, to complex multimorbidity. These features make Internal Medicine both stimulating and challenging, especially as the field continuously evolves through evidence and best clinical practices globally.
Internal Medicine (IM) specialists provide a service that is essential for the safe and optimum delivery of health care. Conditions managed by Internal Medicine specialists and its subspecialties represent a very high proportion of patients seen daily. Regardless of what speciality a patient is admitted, it is common that input from the Internal Medicine specialist is required from diagnosis to recovery. Internal Medicine specialists must be skilled diagnosticians and be interested in solving problems which are often complex. They play a central role in establishing connections between symptoms, signs and available data, while considering the person with the illness, to formulate a tailored holistic management plan as part of person-centred care.
Trainees in Internal Medicine will gain a broad-based experience in the generality of medicine together with periods spent training in a range of subspecialties. This training will provide the experience for future independent practice, whether in a tertiary hospital or a remote rural facility. IM postgraduate training will ensure a solid foundation for a physician who will not only treat patients physically but also be mindful of person suffering from the illness. Internal Medicine also provides opportunities that promote multidisciplinary engagement with other health care professionals that focus on the holistic care of patients creating a rewarding training environment.
